Description |
Amanda Crandall (born 1963) Landscape #71, 1997 Encaustic, oil, acrylic, gold leaf, and wax on wood 2 1/4 x 3 1/5 x 3 1/5 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 1999 gift of Daniel F. McGehee Crandall creates small painted "objects" that capture and preserve her notions of the American landscape and the challenges it has faced in the last century. Her works hark back to great Hudson River School landscape paintings of the late 19th century. However, each composition represents imagery the artist observed while traveling through forested areas beyond the edges of commercial development. Crandall's landscape imagery is presented in a form resembling precious, highly personal mementos that underscore her perceptions of the state of America's wilderness. |
