Chris Verene (Galesburg, Illinois 1969; lives and works in Brooklyn) Untitled (from the Galesburg Series), 1997 Color coupler print,1/20 24 x 20 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2006 gift of Erik Schneider Chris Verene began the Galesburg Series in 1984, setting out to document his Galesburg, Illinois hometown. He returns there every summer to photograph people whose lives seem to intersect with one another. Verene began taking photographs of his friends and neighbors as a teenager, when he learned to use a camera. He focuses on empathetic portrayals of the people he grew up with in this small town in mid-America. The photographs are compassionate portraits of family and friends, yet they also convey the isolation and oddities we may experience in everyday living. The narrative text Verene adds enhances the photograph's familiarity. Verene's work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Whitney Museum of American Art, NY, the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN, and the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA, among others. |
