Description |
Beauford Delaney (Knoxville 1901-1979 Paris) Untitled (New York City), circa 1948 Watercolor on paper 15 1/2 x 22 1/2 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2014 purchase with funds provided by KMA Collectors Circle In his New York City scenes from the 1940s, Beauford Delaney uses bold brushwork and jewel-like hues to define the geometric contours of lampposts, directional signs, manhole covers, fire escapes, and other features whose distinctive shapes appealed to his eye. The artist's adventurous approach to color endows even the grittiest settings with a vibrancy designed to express the larger unity and higher presence he perceived beneath the external layer of his surroundings. The shard-like color shapes and saturated palette seen here may have been inspired in part by Delaney's interest in transparent and reflective surfaces such as storefront windows and stained glass. |
