Baldwin Lee (Brooklyn 1951; lives and works in Knoxville) Columbia, South Carolina, 1984 Gelatin silver print 14 ¾ x 18 ½ inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2016 gift of Dottie and John Habel in honor of Baldwin Lee Baldwin Lee is a professor emeritus of photography at the University of Tennessee, nationally-exhibited artist, and former assistant to renowned American photographer Walker Evans. He is perhaps best known for his images of African-American life in the South taken during the 1980s. Although working during a time of national economic prosperity, Lee captured scenes of daily life in the rural South that are often startling in their depiction of glaring poverty. |
