Description |
Tom Huck (Farmington, Missouri 1971; lives and works in Park Hills, Missouri)) Hog Scalders, 1999 Woodcut, edition of 25 Published by Landfall Press, Inc. 40 x 27 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2015 gift of Helen and Russell Novak in honor of their children, Janet Novak Goldberg of blessed memory and James Alan Novak Tom Huck is a contemporary printmaker who specializes in densely detailed, monochromatic woodcuts inspired by Old Master prints and underground comics. The artist's often violent and brutal imagery reflects in many ways his heartfelt response to traumatic events he experienced growing up in a small town in Missouri. Each woodcut requires elaborate hand carving and takes the artist as much as one year to create due the intricacy and scale of his compositions. Not unlike a movie director, Huck begins with dozens of sketches that he pares down and shifts until reaching a final arrangement. After drawing on the wood blocks with pen and ink, he uses wood gouges and knives to carve out each bit of imagery. |
