Carl Sublett (Johnson County, Kentucky 1919-2008 Union, Maine) Center Fold, 1979 Watercolor on folded and punctured paper 29 1/2 x 40 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 1991 gift of the Carl Sublett Family Center Fold demonstrates Sublett's inventive approach to watercolor painting. Here he uses techniques in order enliven his paper surface with sculptural qualities. First, he presses wet paper over angular cardboard shapes to produce an embossed effect. Next, he used an awl to create patterns consisting of scratches and holes, which collect excess watercolor as it dries. |
