Description |
Beauford Delaney (Knoxville 1901-1979 Paris) Untitled, 1960 Watercolor, gouache, and sand on paper 27 1/2 x 19 1/2 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2014 purchase with funds provided by the Rachael Patterson Young Art Acquisition Reserve Even when working in watercolor, an increasing part of his studio practice after his move to Paris in 1953, Beauford Delaney often built his compositions through dozens of loose organic scrims of paint of varying thickness. As in this untitled work, which features the artist's trademark yellow hues applied onto black paper, Delaney often painted in a progression from dark to light as if embodying the notion of Delaney's life and painterly light as emerging "out of the darkness" of his past, as once described by writer and close friend James Baldwin (1924-1987). This composition is enlivened further with applications of sand and dashes of cobalt blue powdered pigment. |
