Dante Marioni (Mill Valley, California 1964; lives and works in Seattle) Red with Yellow Pair, 2001 Blown glass 37 3/4 x 7 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2007 gift of Jennifer and Greg Dunn Marioni is an internationally known artist who discovered a love for glassblowing from his father Paul Marioni, one of the pioneers of the America Studio Glass Movement. While many contemporary glass artists explore non-traditional forms and methods, Marioni prefers to use centuries-old Venetian glassblowing methods to create meticulously crafted interpretations of classical vessel forms. Red and Yellow Pair represents the artist's trademark approach in its delicate balance, strong color contrasts, and vertically elongated contours. Dante Marioni combines classical forms with bold contemporary color to make these airily elongated objects we instantly recognize as Capital-A Art. Yet Marioni himself insists that making objects is about craftsmanship: "the art of glassblowing rather than the blowing of glass art." Critics praise his precise technique and the synthesis of the two great 20th century art glass movements-Venetian and studio glass-evident in his work. Critic John Perreault asserts, "When you look at a Marioni you are forced to examine what self expression, and even emotion, means. In both cases, we are confronting aspects of the beautiful." Marioni's honors include an Outstanding Achievement in Glass, Urban Glass Award, from the New York Contemporary Glass Center; the Young Americans Award, from the American Craft Museum; and the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award. His work appears in more than 30 major collections including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, London's Victoria & Albert Museum, the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery, the Chrysler Museum in Norfolk, Virginia, and the Cincinnati Art Museum. A pair of his vessels graces the White House Yellow Oval Room. |
