Once when his mother Delia made up his bed with a bright red spread the artist later confessed that the color "excited him so much that he couldn't sleep all night." This vivid composition consists of layers of color applied in lyrical interlocking patterns. Of Delaney's early 1960s abstractions close friend and fellow painter Paul Jenkins wrote, "The structure was there in each painting but one sensed more of a veil than a grid. It was as if he had cut hundreds of flowers and crushed them. Stems and all." |
