Beauford Delaney (Knoxville 1901-1979 Paris) Untitled (Washington Square Park), circa 1940s Ink on spiral notebook paper 4 1/8 x 7 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2014 purchase with funds provided by the Rachael Patterson Young Art Acquisition Reserve During the 1940s, Greenwich Village's parks-especially Washington Square Park-served as frequent subjects for Beauford Delaney's abstracted urban scenes. He lived only a few blocks from Washington Square and it served as the subject of several major canvases, each with its own distinctive color scheme and linear rhythms. Evident in each work, however, as in this sketch, is the painter's keen interest in the looping contours of the park's path fencing and to the orb-like shape of its lamppost bulbs. |
