Butler (Fort Dodge, Iowa 1945; lives and works in Bloomington, Illinois) Boy Were the Frogs Out Last Night, 1971 Lithograph on paper 41 x 28 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 1971 purchase award from the 7th Dulin National Print and Drawing Competition James Butler ranks as among the leading artists of lithograph on papery in contemporary American Printmaking, and The Knoxville Museum of Art is fortunate to have acquired a representative selection of his works through the the annual Dulin National competitions. The museum owns four of his works from 1971, 1979, 1985 and 1987. Although his images vary widely in their character, Butler prefers the smooth surfaces offered by lithography in contrast to the more physical and aggressive surfaces achieved through the intaglio process. |
