She traveled extensively, studying with famed muralist Diego Rivera in Mexico, and shared her mentor's interest in using art as a vehicle for commenting on social and political realities. She came to Knoxville in the mid 1950s as artist in residence at the University of Tennessee, and was commissioned to produce a large mural painting on music traditions across the state. Tehuana Mother represents Greenwood's work as a printmaker, and her longstanding commitment to portraying ordinary people from diverse cultures with strength and dignity. |
