Beauford Delaney (Knoxville 1901-1979 Paris) Untitled (Portrait of a Young Man), 1928 Charcoal on paper 20 1/2 x 13 1/2 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2017 purchase with funds provided by the Rachael Patterson Young Art Acquisition Reserve This early drawing represents the beginning of Beauford Delaney's professional career, which he spent in Boston from 1923-1929. While in Boston, he focused on portraiture rendered in a clear manner that reflected his strong academic training. However, encounters with the work of Picasso, Van Gogh, Monet, and Matisse at local museums inspired him to experiment with bold color and expressive distortions of form in order to reach his new goal of "bringing the inner world to life" rather than capturing a certain physical likeness. |
