Charles E. Burchfield (Ashtabula Harbor, Ohio 1893-1967 New York) Winter Mist and Snow, 1948-58 Watercolor and chalk on paper 30 x 40 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 1996 gift of the Charles E. Burchfield Foundation Charles E. Burchfield is one of America's most important early 20th century painters. We often group him with Arthur Dove and Charles Sheeler although his work is much different. His quiet paintings of the natural world have influenced many artists. He moved to Buffalo, NY in 1921 to work for a wallpaper company. By 1929 he had obtained a New York gallery, allowing him to leave his job and work on his art fulltime. He claimed that it was the "romantic side of the real world" that he tried to portray through his art. The world's largest collection of his work is in the Burchfield-Penny Art Center at Buffalo State College, NY. |
