Description |
Alice Baber (Charleston, Illinois 1928-1982 New York) The Mesa in the Dream of the Jaguar, 1981 Watercolor on paper 22 1/4 x 30 1/4 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 1993 gift of the Alice Baber Art Fund, Inc. Though the titles of her work seem to suggest otherwise, the primary subject of Alice Baber's paintings is the interaction of color and light. Given the brilliant sun and tropical environment of her Florida home, this is not surprising. The artist frequently used the "jaguar" theme as a way of suggesting a stormy, aggressive subtext to her calm, lyrically painted forms. The theme may also stem from her study of South American and Indian mythology. |
