C. Kermit "Buck" Ewing (Bentleyville, Pennsylvania 1910-1976 Bali, Indonesia) Untitled, 1969 Oil on canvas 25 x 28 1/2 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2012 gift of Pinky/MM Bass from the Marion Sundberg McCall Estate C. Kermit "Buck" Ewing was a charismatic and influential voice for avant garde art in East Tennessee during the mid 20th century. The Pittsburgh native came to Knoxville in the late 1940s and soon founded the University of Tennessee's art department. Although Ewing is perhaps best known for his carefully described urban scenes and figure studies, he often painted broad landscapes in which he experimented with loose, expressive brushwork. |
