Description |
Amy Pleasant (Birmingham, Alabama 1972; lives and works in Birmingham, Alabama) On the Ground Below, 2011 Ink and gouache on paper 45 1/2 x 72 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2016 gift of the artist in memory of Ruby and James Lents Amy Pleasant explores moments in daily life, the passage of time, and the nature of memory. In her paintings and drawings, silhouetted figures appear alone, in pairings or small groups, and are shown in profile or from behind within unoccupied spaces. On the Ground Below, for instance, presents dozens of individualized silhouetted heads, each formed from a single dab of the artist's loaded brush. Minor variations in the degree of detail give the impression of a universe of memories in flux, some indelibly bold and others dissolving into oblivion. |
