Murray Percival Bewley (Fort Worth, Texas 1884-1964 Lyons, France) Doris, no date Oil on canvas 34 x 28 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 1970 gift of the IBM Corporation Bewley studied with Cecilia Beaux at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and with Robert Henri and William Merritt Chase in New York City. The majority of his paintings are portraits and nudes. Yet near the end of his life he turned to still lifes and flower paintings. His work is characterized by a soft, loose brush stroke, and his palette is often violets and opalescent colors. His work is in the Dallas Museum of Art, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia. |
