Michael Boyd (Waterloo, Iowa 1936; lives and works in Ithaca, New York) Owasa, 1983 Acrylic on canvas 60 x 60 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 1989 gift of Michael Boyd and Andre Zarre Boyd's geometric abstraction may suggest the work of Dutch painter Piet Mondrian (1872-1944) whose grid paintings had a profound impact on modern artists of the early 20th century and beyond. Artists as diverse as Ad Reinhardt, Frank Stella, and Agnes Martin have all used grids to organize space in their abstract paintings. Boyd names his painting after a town in his home state of Iowa. |
