John Kelley (Knoxville 1952; lives and works in New York and Knoxville) Prometheus I, 1987 Oil on canvas 63 1/2 x 47 3/4 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 1993 gift of the artist As did French neoclassical painters such as Poussin (1594-1665) and Ingres (1781-1867), John Kelley looks to classical civilization for artistic inspiration. Here, he depicts the legendary Titan of Greek mythology who stole fire from the gods, thereby sparking humanity's technological progress. As punishment for his deed, Prometheus was chained to a large rock and thereafter attacked by the god Zeus in the form of a large eagle. |
