Description |
Julie (Warren Martin) Conn (Knoxville 1943; lives and works in Lexington, Kentucky) Laocoön, 1992 Carved Tennessee marble 25 x 36 x 9 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 1995 gift of the artist After local mill workers instructed Martin on how to use power tools on stone, the Knoxville artist shifted away from creating metal sculptures. This marble sculpture demonstrates Martin's command of stone as an artistic medium - notice the rhythmic lines and curves. Such fluid curves and forms led the artist to name the piece Laocoön. Laocoön refers to an ancient Greek sculpture that depicts the story of Laocoön and his sons battling a giant snake. |
