Enrique Chagoya (Mexico City 1953; lives and works in Palo Alto, California) Abenteurer der Kannibalen Bioethicists, 2001 Lithograph, woodcut, chine collé, collage, 1/4 patron impressions (edition of 30) Printed by Shark's Ink 7½ x 92 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2015 gift of Helen and Russell Novak in honor of their children, Janet Novak Goldberg of blessed memory and James Alan Novak This print by multi-media artist Enrique Chagoya appears as a codex, a foldout book format inspired by historical manuscripts created by his pre-Columbian ancestors. The labor-intensive work consists of dozens of individual pieces of paper and printed elements. The artist uses the term "cannibal" in his titles to refer to the historical practice in which dominant cultures cannibalize ideas, traditions, images, and objects from their subordinates. Chagoya imitates this process by taking images from various cultures and presenting them in satirical and provocative combinations designed to spark new questions about religious persecution and other forms of social injustice. |
