Description |
Ori Gersht (Tel-Aviv, Israel 1967; lives and works in London) Untitled 4, 2007 From the series: "Time After Time: Exploding Flowers & Other Matters" C-print mounted on aluminum, 2/6 15 3/4 x 13 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2009 purchase with funds provided by KMA Collectors Circle Gersht reinterprets the long tradition of European still life art and places it in a new, sinister context inspired by his fear-filled childhood in Israel. Untitled 04 is from a series in which he soaked flowers in liquid nitrogen, and photographed them as they were destroyed with explosives. Early shots, like Untitled 04, offer a final glimpse at the beauty of the arrangement, while later shots in the series capture the final stages of the explosion and resemble abstract paintings. Gersht's work has been exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Yale Center for British Art, Victoria & Albert Museum, London; and the Tate Modern, London. He is represented in the collections of the Guggenheim Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; Tate Gallery, London; and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. |
