Ruth Bernhard (Berlin, Germany 1905-2006 San Francisco) In the Box, Horizontal, 1962 Gelatin silver print, printed in 1992, edition of 50 18 x 24 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2007 gift of Ruth Bernhard Estate Bernhard was a prominent California-based photographer who specialized in dramatic black and white prints of female nudes. Legendary landscape photographer Ansel Adams is said to have considered Bernhard the greatest photographer of the nude. In the Box, Horizontal represents Bernhard's ability to juxtapose nude figures with the simplest of studio props to create elegant, enigmatic compositions. |
