Description |
Lloyd Branson (Union County, Tennessee 1853-1925 Knoxville) Going Home at Dusk, 1920 Oil on board 43 3/4 x 51 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2010 purchase with funds provided by Kay and Jim Clayton, Martha and Jim Begalla, Ann and Steve Bailey, Patricia and Alan Rutenberg, Townes Osborn, and Sylvia and Jan Peters One of Knoxville's first professional painters, Lloyd Branson excelled at portraiture of distinguished local figures and scenes of outdoor life in East Tennessee. Going Home at Dusk is a late work in which Branson uses loose dabs of bright pigment and broad areas of thin paint to suggest a luminous, humid evening on an East Tennessee farm. Branson's emphasis on dramatic atmospheric effects represents his occasional interest in exploring Impressionist painting techniques. This interest was in all likelihood encouraged by Knoxville painter and close friend Catherine Wiley. This painting was given to Matthew G. Thomas in 1923 by the officers of Appalachian Mills (now Cherokee Mills, Sutherland Avenue) as a retirement gift. It was later given to his daughter, Mary Thomas Fleury, by his wife, Anne H. Thomas. A recent cleaning of the painting helped reveal Branson's subtle and inventive use of color, set off by a new period-style frame. |
