Description |
Hiraki Sawa (Ishikawa, Japan 1977; lives and works in London) Between, 2004 3 channel DVD installation, 4/8 Duration 6:35 minutes Knoxville Museum of Art, 2008 purchase Japanese-born video artist Hiraki Sawa uses digital manipulation, and rhythmic movement to create dream-like video montages that blend domestic and supernatural imagery. Many works include symbolic references to flight, and transition. In Between, Sawa transforms his London apartment into a mysterious, shadowy setting in which illusion and reality merge. Three screens present different views of the artist's home-dark floorboards, a brilliantly-lit ceiling, and a hidden, intermediate space inhabited by tiny trees and toy-like birds. The title and multi-panel format suggest Sawa's own experience as an artist struggling to bridge cultural barriers. Sawa's work is represented in the collections of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, St. Louis Art Museum, Detroit Institute of Arts, and Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. |
