Description |
Richard Clarke (Noblesville, Indiana 1923-1997 Knoxville) Palimpsest, 1960 Watercolor on paper 18 x 24 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2012 gift of Stephanie and John Case Clarke was one of the early members of the University of Tennessee's art faculty. He found inspiration for his watercolor abstractions in the natural world around him. Palimpsest, however, represents his interest in studies of flat surfaces-old walls, desktops, etc.-which he synthesized into layered abstractions. In this case, he examines what appears to be an old wall or bulletin board on which layers of printed text fragments overlap. He uses delicate transparent washes to suggest submerged text whose indecipherable script has become visible through torn openings or superimposed sheets worn thin by time and the elements. |
