Gordon Mortensen (Arnegard, North Dakota 1938; lives and works in Carmel, California) Foxtail and Sage, 1975 Woodcut on paper 25 3/4 x 32 1/2 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 1976 purchase award from the 10th Dulin National Print and Drawing Competition Relief methods use wood, linoleum or metal and part of the block or plate is cut away while the design is left raised, or "in relief." Ink is then applied to the block and an impression can be made either with a printing press or by hand. Woodcut on papers came into use in the late 14th century for the printing of playing cards and block books. It is possible to get fine lines and intricate detailing with woodcut on papers. |
