Richard Clarke (Noblesville, Indiana 1923-1997 Knoxville) Untitled, 1972 Watercolor on paper 18 x 24 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2017 gift of Marie and Bob Alcorn After earning his master's degree in fine arts from the University of Wisconsin, Indiana native Richard Clarke joined the University of Tennessee's art faculty as early as 1956, and began exhibiting with the Knoxville 7 in 1960. He was active as a printmaker and a painter. Initially, he produced both oil and watercolor paintings before shifting exclusively to watercolors by the early 1960s. He specialized in landscape imagery rendered in varying degrees of abstraction using controlled marks using delicate angular strokes and broad transparent washes. Although somewhat shy, Clarke was a passionate instructor whose academic interests included philosophy, advanced color theory, axiology, and aesthetics. He often painted out of doors, and the Maine coast and local marble quarries were among his favorite locations. On these excursions he was sometimes accompanied by Walter Stevens and Carl Sublett. Clarke's studio practice slowed down considerably after he retired from teaching in 1990. |
