Ted Smith, W. Bedford Waters Focusing on the cradling shapes of basketry as a reference point to develop my forms, and the seasonal colors of the native grasses to develop my palette and incorporate a sense of place, I hope to create delicate and unique objects that reflect this extraordinary environment. - Cobi Cockburn Cockburn is a highly-acclaimed artist known for her distinctive glass sculptures inspired by the natural environment and indigenous Australian basketry. Her intricate technique involves coloring and fusing thousands of tiny fibers of glass, and shaping them into elegant vessel forms reflecting the fluidity of glass and the fibrous textures of traditional woven vessels. Mere (2008) is a stellar example of Cobi's approach, and promises to add a distinctive international flavor to the KMA's growing collection of contemporary glass. Cockburn is a graduate of the Sydney College of Art in Australia and an honors graduate of the Glass Workshop at Canberra School of Art. She received the prestigious Ranamok Glass Prize in 2006, and the Vicki Torr Memorial Prize at the Ausglass International Conference in 2005. Her work is frequently included in exhibitions from Sydney to London, and from Portland to Munich. Her art has been featured in New Glass Review, Art Ltd, and Craft Arts International. |
