Description |
Enrique Chagoya (Mexico City 1953; lives and works in Palo Alto, California) Illegal Alien's Guide to Somewhere Over the Rainbow, 2010 Color lithograph with chine collé, 1/4 patron impressions (edition of 30) Printed by Shark's Ink 24¾ x 40¾ inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2015 gift of Helen and Russell Novak in honor of their children, Janet Novak Goldberg of blessed memory and James Alan Novak Inventive printmaker Enrique Chagoya produces dense and colorful compositions filled with iconic imagery from pop culture, Catholicism, pre-Columbian mythology, and other sources. He uses irreverent satire to express his personal views on contemporary ills such as border wars, colonialism, and cultural imperialism. Chagoya's prints take many forms including foldout books, maps, and tapestry-sized sheets mounted on fabric. The artist uses Amate, a particular type of fibrous sun-dried paper imported from Mexico, because it was commonly used by his pre-Columbian ancestors. |
