Description |
Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (Paris, France 1796-1875 Paris) Souvenir de Toscane, circa 1865 Etching on paper, ed 750 5 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 1964 purchase The title of this piece, "Memory of Tuscany" suggests Corot's interest in Italy. Corot worked as a cloth merchant (he was the son of milliners) before deciding to become an artist at age 26. Corot was one of France's precursors to the Impressionists whose plein air (out of doors) paintings borrowed from Corot's impressions of the natural world. However, Corot is much more of a realist than the Impressionists. He is usually linked with the Barbizon School, a group of realist landscape artists based in the small town of Barbizon, near Paris.
