Philip Pearlstein (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 1924; lives and works in New York) Model in a Kimono on a Plastic Chair, 2000 Lithograph, 5/30 Published by Landfall Press, Inc. 19 1/2 x 25 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2015 gift of Helen and Russell Novak in honor of their children, Janet Novak Goldberg of blessed memory and James Alan Novak Philip Pearlstein is a veteran realist painter known for his theatrical interior scenes featuring nude models surrounded by various studio props. His detached, analytical approach to depicting human figures suppresses any hints of sensuality. Cropped and anonymous, the models appear as little more than still life objects within complex arrangements in which formal concerns-line, color, pattern, and pictorial space-occupy the central role. |
