Description |
Sam Taylor-Wood (London, England 1967; lives and works in London, England) Looking Out, 2001 Color coupler print, 21/200 6 ½ x 22 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2006 gift of Erik Schneider Taylor-Wood is a British photographer and filmmaker whose enigmatic works rely on cinematic practices such as acting, wide-angle scenes, and light manipulation. The 360-degree effect of her films and photographs allows the viewer a panoramic view into the scene and into the emotional range of the works. The background is often as important as the people in Taylor-Wood's pieces. Here, the dynamic perspective and beautiful light from the window provide a pulling/pushing effect, drawing us in and yet pushing us away. The girl, absorbed in a contemplative reverie seems almost lost in the vacuum of the interior scene whose beauty may intrigue us. Taylor-Wood was nominated for Britain's prestigious Turner prize in 1997. Her work is in the public collections of The Guggenheim Museum, New York City, Albright-Knox Gallery, Buffalo, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, and others. |
