Clifford Rainey (Whitehead, County Antrim, Northern Ireland 1948; lives and works in Oakland, California) The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, 1984 Cast glass from recycled Coke bottles, sheet glass, scorched wood, iron nails 41 x 10 x 10 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2012 gift of Richard B. Sloan Clifford Rainey is a British sculptor best known for his cast glass sculptures that reference ancient civilizations, cultural desecration, and the global effects of industry. Rainey's interest in the Coca-Cola bottle as a motif was inspired by a hiking trip to Zambia when a boy suddenly emerged from the bush to offer him a bottle of the soft drink. He recognized it as a powerful symbol of globalized industry, and was struck by its similarity to columns and figurative sculpture from antiquity. Its form ravaged by nails and shards of plate glass, The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian suggests a time-worn artifact excavated from an archaeological site. |
