Beauford Delaney (Knoxville 1901-1979 Paris) Untitled (Clamart), 1959 Watercolor and gouache on paper 24 1/2 x 18 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2014 purchase with funds provided by KMA Collectors Circle After moving to the Paris suburb of Clamart in 1955, Beauford Delaney ventured into an expanded range of media, including an extensive series of abstract oils and watercolors marked by subtle variations in pigment density, color, and surface texture. He also intensified his exploration of light in evocative abstractions featuring radiant hues applied over layers of darker pigment. In pursuing the desire for his art to achieve a necessary degree of "color radiance, an offering to life," Delaney breaks down the compartmentalized imagery of his earlier work into layered veils of loose pigment, as if the bounded shapes of old had ruptured and their inner contents released. Barely visible within fiery hues of this composition are rows of looping calligraphic marks.
