Radcliffe Bailey (Bridgetown, New Jersey 1968-2023 Atlanta, Georgia) School Days 1947-48, 2008 Acrylic, photograph, watercolor, oil stick, spray paint, and black glitter within shadowbox frame with black acrylic on glass cover 60 1/4 x 60 x 6 7/8 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2023 purchase with funds provided by KMA Collectors Circle Ancestral memory and cultural identity represent core themes that fueled the artistic practice of multi-media artist Radcliffe Bailey. Bailey combines found objects, painted motifs, and photographic imagery to create engaging compositions inspired by the Middle Passage, the Great Migration, and other key stages in the history of the African diaspora. Symbolizing the difficult journeys of anonymous ancestors, School Days features an old family portrait at the center of a constellation of imagery related to travel-including oars, ships, longitudinal lines, and coastal views. Such open-ended narratives serve to interweave individual experiences and personal histories within the collective trajectories of the diaspora. His work was featured in the 2022 KMA-organized exhibition Radcliffe Bailey: Passages. |
