Tim Davis (Blantyre, Malawi 1969; lives and works in Tivoli, New York) Ecstasy of St. Francis, 2003 Chromogenic print, edition of 6 37 x 50 3/4 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2007 purchase with funds provided by KMA Collectors Circle New York photographer Tim is concerned with light and his desire to reveal its effect in ways we're not familiar with. He then prints them almost actual size so that they become a representation of the original work. However, it is the reflection of light off the surface of the paintings that pinpoints the difference between the actual painting and photograph. The glare that Davis captures on the paintings' surfaces provides the paintings with an unexpected luminescence that adds to and sometimes changes the energy of the piece by obscuring one's view of the painting. Light has long been a major element for artists. For Monet it was sunlight to Monet, for Manet it was flashbulb light and for Caravaggio it was candlelight. Tim Davis finds fascination in artificial lighting and how the light used by institutions affects the character of artwork. For Permanent Collection, Davis traveled to museums across the country, including Atlanta's High Museum and the Art, KMA and the Institute of Chicago. Then, he photographed how the light these museums use to illuminate their oil paintings can reveal or obscure. |
