Marion Greenwood (Brooklyn 1909-1970 Woodstock, New York) Sketch for History of Tennessee Mural, 1954 Charcoal on textured paper 24 x 18 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2014 purchase Greenwood was a prominent artist who was commissioned by the University of Tennessee in 1954 to create a mural painting for the new University Center ballroom representing Tennessee's musical heritage. She worked on the mural largely at night, and recruited university students as faculty as models for many of her figures. By day, Greenwood taught classes as a visiting professor of fine arts. The resulting 28-foot long composition illustrates the distinctive music of the state's three main divisions-delta blues of West Tennessee, country music of Middle Tennessee, and religious music of East Tennessee. This drawing represents a study for the East Tennessee church service participant at the far right of the mural. In the painting he appears to lean on a cane, but in the drawing he holds a book-perhaps a bible or hymnal. |
