Description |
Jane Hammond (Bridgeport, Connecticut 1950; lives and works in New York) Love Laughs, 2005 Lithograph with hand-coloring and collage, 1/4 patron impressions (edition of 45) Printed by Shark's Ink 51 1/4 x 33 3/4 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2015 gift of Helen and Russell Novak in honor of their children, Janet Novak Goldberg of blessed memory and James Alan Novak Drawing on her interest in astrology, magic, and other centuries-old alternative arts and sciences, Jane Hammond uses a selection of symbols that serve as the basis for her paintings and works on paper. They allow her to make images that, as she explains, are "wandering and unpredictable even to me." In Love Laughs, pictograms transform a cross-sectioned home into a densely populated cabinet of curiosities. Hammond added hand-colored collage elements that magnify the composition's depth and enrich its surface. |
