Description |
Susanne Kühn (Leipzig, Germany 1969; lives and works in Freiburg, Germany) Trail, 2010 Color lithograph, 1/2 patron impressions (edition of 20) Printed by Shark's Ink 30 x 22 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2015 gift of Helen and Russell Novak in honor of their children, Janet Novak Goldberg of blessed memory and James Alan Novak Susanne Kühn is known for her vividly colored, carefully described scenes of contemporary suburban life along the forest's edge. Although seamless in appearance, her compositions blend passages borrowed from sources such as modern comics, Northern Renaissance and Japanese prints, and East German graphic design. Kühn manipulates her scenery by adding fantastical flora and other surreal elements, altering light and shadow, and distorting perspective. In this way, the artist disrupts any specific narrative and raises questions about the contemporary dialogue between nature and civilization. |
