Michelle Grabner (Oshkosh, Wisconsin 1962; lives and works in Oak Park, Illinois) Untitled, 2013 Flashe on panel 20 x 16 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2019 gift of Elin and Michael Nierenberg Michelle Grabner is a conceptual artist, curator, and critic whose paintings express her ongoing effort to reconcile the realities of everyday domestic life with the traditions of modern and contemporary painting. As suburban mother, Grabner found inspiration for her studio practice in the woven patterns found in tablecloths and linens, which she appropriated in gridded paintings that also reference hard-edged abstract art. She often uses flashe paint, whose velvety matte finish absorbs light in a manner akin to domestic fabrics. The repetitive gestures required in the making of her austere gridded paintings can be seen as a metaphor for the tedium of daily domestic routines. |
