Brad Brown (Raleigh, North Carolina 1964; lives and works in San Francisco) Drifting Low E, 2002 Color lithographs in 48 parts, 1/3 patron impressions (edition of 30) Printed by Shark's Ink 32½ x 41½ inches (5 x 5 inches each) Knoxville Museum of Art, 2015 gift of Helen and Russell Novak in honor of their children, Janet Novak Goldberg of blessed memory and James Alan Novak Brad Brown abandons conscious control over his large drawings in order to explore the expressive possibilities offered by blending intentional and random marks. He creates open-ended works comprised of many parts developed over many years. In 2002, Brown's work caught the eye of master printer Bud Shark, who invited him to produce a series of prints. As to why Shark targeted him, the artist explains, "My work deals with fragmentation and unity and repetition and variation, and that's where printmaking really lives." The result was the 5-part Drifting Low series, of which Drifting Low E is the last and largest work. Brown used a set of 20 x 20 inch printing plates, each of which he developed without reference to the others. Following Brown's standard working method, Shark coupled up and printed the plates in random sequences and orientations. Brown then tore the pages into 5 x 5-inch fragments and composed the final arrangement out of those parts. |
