Jemima Stehli (London, England 1961; lives and works in London) Flesh, 2001 C-print, 2/3 48 4/5 x 40 1/2 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2009 gift of Richard D. McCrary Jr. Stehli creates staged self-portraits using a mirror in her studio by performing naked for her own camera. The resulting images are disorienting compositions; although the camera and its tripod are clearly visible, the mirror confuses both its position and our gaze. Her images often present a dual reality: they affirm her role as artist and the reality of the artist's creative arena, while also presenting that stage as a place where women become exposed victims of exploitation, and voyeurism. Stehli thereby proposes that while the female subject is in control of her image, she is at the same time the object of the photographic gaze. |
