Beatrice Louise Mitchell (American, born 1931) Moving in Quiet Waters, 1984 Mezzotint on paper 11 3/4 x 12 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 1986 purchase award from 18th Dulin National Works on Paper Competition, 1986.01.06 The printmaking process, mezzotint was developed in the 17th century for printing realistic images, but the technique was largely diminished with the invention of newer photograph on paperic processes in the mid nineteenth century. Mezzotint printing involves manipulating a copper or steel plate with a serrated tool called a rocker. The rocker creates raised ridges from the plate surface to capture ink. To soften the effect, the design can be burnished and thus, will hold less ink for printing. |
