Christo (Gabrovo, Bulgaria 1935-2020 New York City) Wrapped Bottle and Cans (Project), 2004 Lithograph on BFK Rives paper, 23/30 Published by Landfall Press, Inc. 15.25 x 13.75 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2015 gift of Helen and Russell Novak in honor of their children, Janet Novak Goldberg of blessed memory and James Alan Novak Christo is a conceptual artist known for exploring themes of shape and concealment. As early as 1958, he and his partner Jeanne Claude began wrapping basic studio objects-paint cans, bottles, jars-in resin-soaked canvas, and placing them in small groupings. By cloaking the identity of the items, the artist found he was able to accentuate their pure sculptural qualities. Christo eventually used the wrapped objects for an installation called Inventory (1958-1960), in which they occupied a corner of an exhibition space as if supplies for a new household. Decades later, the objects inspired him to produce a series of prints in which he reinterprets his wrapped objects as detailed shapes on a flat surface. For Christo, known for making large temporary installations, prints serve as a vital means of recording ideas, documenting works that no longer exist, and offering audiences an alternate format to his time-based creations that most can never see. |
