Bhakti Baxter (Miami 1979; lives and works in Miami) Henry Moore in the River (Brace Yourselves), 2012 C-print, edition 1/5 12 x 9 ½ inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2013 gift of Richard D. McCrary, Jr. Baxter is a rising contemporary artist based in Miami who produces multi-media works often using imagery borrowed from art history and popular culture. He constructs his compositions in ways that manipulate viewer expectations-often by placing iconic art objects in thought-provoking new contexts. In order to create this print, Baxter spliced two magazine images and then photographed them. The work stems from a series in which the artist explores the idea of modern art placed in untamed natural settings. Baxter takes an image of Mother and Child (1936) a stone carving by noted British sculptor Henry Moore (1898-1986), removes it from its ordinary museum surroundings, and places it in a dense tropical wilderness. Baxter's choice of new setting was perhaps inspired by the character of Moore's stone sculptures, which often appear the result of natural erosion by wind or water. The juxtaposition also calls into question the temporal nature of all works made by human hands despite elaborate and costly efforts to preserve them. |
