Here, Harvey captures in concise form one of countless weekly routines that were part of life for her and many other African Americans living in the rural South. The work stems from Harvey's self-titled "Africa in America" series in which she gave sculptural form to the suffering and perseverance of African Americans. It was featured in the KMA's 1997 retrospective Bessie Harvey: Awakening the Spirits. |
