His works stem from single images seen in art history books, advertising, pop culture and other various sources. These images spark bold, elaborate compositions in which the artist explores subtle variations in scale, mark, line, shape, color, density, and transparency. In A Type of Magic, Sprecher began by painting a large, angular background shape taken from a famous print by Albrecht Durer on which he applied layer after layer of brushwork until the original image became obscured. Sprecher's work has been shown in galleries and museums around the world including The Drawing Center, New York; Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; Jeff Bailey Gallery, New York; Wendy Cooper Gallery, Chicago, OSP Gallery, Boston; the Art Gallery of Knoxville, and the Cheekwood Museum of Art, Nashville. |
