Description |
Steven Campbell (Glasgow 1953-2007 Stirling, Scotland) Study for a Man Possessed by a Demon of the Retina, circa 1985 Oil on paper mounted on board 80 x 64 inches Knoxville Museum of Art, 2015 gift of Bruce D. Fisher This is a large oil painting on paper by one of Scotland's most celebrated neo-expressionist painters, Steven Campbell. Campbell favored bold figurative subjects inspired by literature and film, and which often took a critical look at British upper-class life. He often used recurring visual motifs to hint at possible narratives which are rarely straightforward or easy to decode. During the artist's lifetime this practice led to some critics to dismiss his work as disjointed and inaccessible. However, following his death his reputation seemed to rise, with The Times newspaper calling him 'one of the most forceful and original artists to have emerged lately in Britain', and The Guardian 'The most exciting painter to emerge anywhere for many years'. |
